Book of the Month – August 2019

At the beginning of each month, we spotlight a staff-favorite book that meets our objective of sharing thoughtful stories to help our audience experience their world in a smarter, healthier, and happier way.

August’s Book of the Month is:

A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose

What is it?

“With his bestselling spiritual guide The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived “in the now.” In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world. Tolle describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence.

Illuminating, enlightening, and uplifting, A New Earth is a profoundly spiritual manifesto for a better way of life—and for building a better world.”

Amazon.com description

A wake-up call for the entire planet . . . [A New Earth] helps us to stop creating our own suffering and obsessing over the past and what the future might be, and to put ourselves in the now.

– Oprah Winfrey

What are our thoughts?

“Tolle does a much better job in this book than in The Power of Now, in my opinion. The writing style makes his points much more clear.

I found it very helpful, however I do wish he used more real world examples when discussing things like finding your outer purpose and matching it with your inner purpose.

Definitely recommend for anyone interested in spirituality and different approaches to living a fulfilling and meaningful life.”

Why Should You Read It?

Eckhart Tolle gained celebrity status in the new-age/self-help world in his book, The Power of Now. While I also recommend that reading, I found A New Earth to be a much more enjoyable read.

The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but your thoughts about it.

A New Earth

Tolle’s work focuses on the power of mindfulness, of living in the present. His argument is essentially that the only reality we experience is what is happening in the now. The past only exists in our minds as does the future. None of it is real any longer. Your past can only hurt you when you conjure up painful memories in your mind. The future can only affect you when you worry about what might or might not happen.

Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment.

A New Earth

He goes on to discuss how life, in itself, is a miracle. Your life is not your life situation, which is whatever is happening to/for you at the moment. By accepting your life situation, you can then proceed to live with what is going on, change it, or walk away. But acceptance is key so that any decision you make will come from a place of thoughtfulness and mindfulness.

Give up defining yourself – to yourself or to others. You won’t die. You will come to life. And don’t be concerned with how others define you. When they define you, they are limiting themselves, so it’s their problem. Whenever you interact with people, don’t be there primarily as a function or a role, but as the field of conscious Presence. You can only lose something that you have, but you cannot lose something that you are.

A New Earth

There are many more wonderful lessons about letting go, finding your purpose, gratitude, and beyond.

If you are looking for a new book to read with interesting, challenging, and inspiring concepts, A New Earth would be a great fit. It has certainly been instrumental in shifting my perspective towards myself and life.

Happy reading!
